There’s widespread condemnation of Israel after dozens killed in Rafah airstrike. Here’s the latest on the war
The recent Israeli airstrike on a camp for displaced Palestinians in Rafah has sparked widespread condemnation and outrage. The attack, which killed dozens of people, including women and children, has been described by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “tragic mistake.” The Israeli military is currently investigating the incident in the southern Gaza city.
Global leaders have called on Israel to adhere to the International Court of Justice’s ruling to halt military operations in Rafah. The death toll from the airstrike stands at at least 45 people killed and over 200 wounded, with most of the victims being women and children. Shocking footage shows the camp engulfed in flames, with rescuers pulling burned bodies, including those of children, from the wreckage.
The United States has expressed its sadness over the strike, with a National Security Council spokesperson stating that they are actively engaging with Israeli officials to determine what happened. UN Secretary-General António Guterres and other international figures have also condemned the attack, calling for an end to the violence.
In a separate incident, an Israeli airstrike on a home in the Al-Zarqa neighborhood of northern Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least five people, including a 4-year-old girl. The Kuwaiti Hospital in central Rafah was forced to close due to increased Israeli military attacks, leading to the transfer of medical teams to a field hospital in Al-Mawasi.
Tensions between Egypt and Israel have also escalated following the border corridor attack, with reports of a shooting incident resulting in casualties on both sides. The situation remains volatile, with fears of further escalation in the region.
