Justin Trudeau Reacts to Arrest of Three Indians in Hardeep Singh Nijjar Murder Case
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada responded to the recent arrest of three Indian men in connection with the death of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar by emphasizing Canada’s commitment to the rule of law and its strong and independent justice system. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police identified the suspects as Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karan Brar, who were charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The trio was apprehended in Edmonton, Alberta, following the fatal shooting of Nijjar outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a significant Sikh population. Trudeau, speaking at a Toronto event celebrating Sikh heritage and culture, reiterated the importance of upholding justice and protecting all citizens in Canada.
The killing of Nijjar in 2023 had sparked tensions between Canada and India, with Trudeau initially suggesting Indian government involvement based on credible allegations. However, India dismissed these claims as baseless and politically motivated.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar responded to the situation, attributing the controversy to Canada’s internal politics and the influence of pro-Khalistan groups within the country. Jaishankar highlighted the challenges of extradition requests and lack of cooperation in sharing evidence between the two nations.
As the investigation into Nijjar’s murder continues, the case underscores the complex dynamics between Canada, India, and the Sikh community, raising questions about security, diplomacy, and the rule of law in the international arena.
