CBS Sports Announces Changes to “The NFL Today” Pregame Show: Matt Ryan Joins, Simms and Esiason Depart
Former NFL quarterbacks Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason have been replaced on CBS Television’s “NFL Today” pregame show by former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. The network announced the changes on Monday, with Ryan joining the in-studio cast alongside James Brown, Nate Burleson, Bill Cowher, and JJ Watt.
Ryan, a former NFL MVP and four-time Pro Bowl quarterback, will bring his expertise to the show next season after officially retiring from the NFL last week. He expressed his excitement for the new opportunity, stating, “I grew up watching The NFL Today so I’m honored to join this iconic show and hope to continue the high standard set by Phil, Boomer, and others before me.”
Simms and Esiason, who have been with CBS Sports for over two decades, are departing the show after legendary careers. CBS Sports President and CEO David Berson praised their contributions, with Simms being described as “one of the greatest analysts in the history of the NFL.”
Simms took to social media to thank CBS Sports for the 26-year run, while Esiason announced that he will continue his broadcasting career with New York’s WFAN Radio. Despite stepping away from “NFL Today,” Esiason expressed gratitude for his 22-year tenure on the show and the opportunities it provided him.
The changes in the “NFL Today” lineup mark a new chapter for the popular pregame show, with Ryan bringing a fresh perspective and insight to the team. Fans can look forward to seeing how the dynamic of the show evolves with the addition of the former Falcons quarterback.
