Millions of Indians Vote in Next-to-Last Round of National Election
Millions of Indians are participating in the next-to-last round of the national election, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a third consecutive term for himself and his Hindu nationalist party. Despite the scorching heat, voters lined up early at polling stations to cast their ballots in what many consider to be a festival-like atmosphere.
The election, which will complete polling for 89.5% of the seats in the lower house of Parliament, has seen a less-than-expected voter turnout in previous rounds, leaving both sides uncertain about the outcome. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party is facing a broad opposition alliance led by the Indian National Congress and powerful regional parties.
The campaign has been marked by acrimony and mudslinging, with Modi ramping up anti-Muslim rhetoric to polarize voters. The opposition, on the other hand, has focused on issues of social justice and rising unemployment, making the contest closer than expected.
With nearly 970 million eligible voters, this election is considered one of the most consequential in India’s history. If Modi wins, he will be only the second Indian leader to retain power for a third term. The votes will be counted on June 4, and the outcome will determine the future direction of the world’s largest democracy.
