Taliban Poets Sing Praise of New Afghan Order: Poetry as Propaganda

Taliban poets in Afghanistan have shifted their focus from jihad to praising the new government in power. In a recent poetry reading event in Parwan province, young poet Samiullah Hamas declared the government’s rule as a “pure system” and called for unity among the Afghan people. The Taliban government, now in its third year, is using poetry as a tool for propaganda and cultural cohesion, following the departure of foreign forces.

Poetry has become one of the few art forms allowed to flourish under the Taliban’s rule, as they aim to capture the hearts and minds of the Afghan population. However, with restrictions on media, music, and women’s rights, the message of fellowship in poetry does not extend across all boundaries.

Despite the government’s control over public expression, a young Afghan poetess has found solace in writing and sharing her verses privately. She expresses her frustration at the Taliban’s hypocrisy in reciting poetry while restricting others from doing the same.

As the Taliban government continues to shape the cultural landscape of Afghanistan, poets play a crucial role in shaping the narrative and reflecting the changing times.
